Winter skin: when moisturiser stops being enough

When the temperature drops, skin loses water faster than a quick moisturiser can replace. Here's when to step it up — and when to stop guessing.

Why winter cracks you open

Cold air holds less moisture, indoor heating dries it further, and hot showers strip the oils that keep your skin barrier sealed. The result is tight, itchy, flaky skin — and sometimes worse.

Reach for an emollient, not a lotion

Thicker ointments and creams (the ones that feel like too much) hold water in far better than light lotions. Apply within minutes of a warm — not hot — shower, while skin is still damp.

When it's time for a GP

Cracking that weeps or bleeds, spreading redness, or an itch that's stealing your sleep is past the moisturiser stage. Come in — we'll point you to the right product or the right doctor.
